- BLUE JAY SPRINGS AND KLAMATH
MARSH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE ON SATURDAY, JULY 10.
On Saturday, July 10th, the Klamath Basin Audubon Society will conduct a tour to Blue Jay Springs Research Natural Area and Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, about 50 miles north of Klamath Falls. RSVP's are needed by Tuesday, July 6. Blue Jay Springs is a Research Natural Area (RNA) within Winema National Forest near Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. RNA's are administered by the US Forest Service of the Dept of Agriculture. Klamath
Marsh NWR is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System of the US Dept of Interior. RNA's are areas of special scientific interest due to some outstanding natural feature. Blue Jay Springs is noteworthy as one of the best examples of old growth Ponderosa Pine forest and is within one of the largest stands of old growth Ponderosa Pine stands on earth. Special features will be the vegetation and birds as well as the nearby National Wildlife Refuge.
Faye Weekley, Fish & Wildlife Biologist for Klamath Marsh NWR, will lead the tour to Blue Jay Springs and nearby sights at the Refuge. RSVP's are needed by Tuesday, July 6, since Michael Johnson, the Refuge manager, has graciously offered a BBQ for lunch.
Meet at the parking lot of the US Fish and Wildlife Service Office, 1936 California Ave, at 7:00 am for carpooling and caravan from K Falls, or, meet at the Klamath Marsh NWR Headquarters at 8:30 am. The trip will last to early afternoon, with optional extensions through dusk, if sufficient
interest. Please bring hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, water and/or beverages as well as snacks you may need while on the tour. For information and/or RSVP call or notify Marilyn Christian (mchristian1@charter.net; 850-0084 Expect dustyand narrow forest roads. Restrooms are available.
